Planning a true Texas 4th of July celebration means lining up a lot of moving parts, juggling a lot of sizzling pieces.
There’s food to grill. Drinks to chill. A sprinkler to set up for some water to cool off with, or a pool to get cleaned. Probably some fireworks and safety setup.
Decorations, plates, cups, and of course, a bangin’ playlist to boot.
This year, Independence Day is on a Thursday, which means an awesome long weekend is in store, expanding the ways you could host or put things together.
Navigating around town in Houston, and down the path to the perfect party for the 4th is all within reach.
Yet, time’s cutting short, and you want it to look like your 4th of July party was effortless. Even if you’re putting together your July 4th celebration at the last minute.
Here’s the thing though, it can be effortless — or as close to it as possible, with a few key shortcuts and help from those who’ve been there before.
As a native Houstonian, I’ve come to relish the camaraderie around the 4th of July parties more than the things involved.
Not just nailing the right meats and veg (and non meat options) to put on the grill, but how to make sure everyone had a rollicking good time, got to kick back and relax without stressing over any elements of the party. When I lived in an apartment, that also meant looking for getaway digs where I could host a handful of people, or a bigger group, out at a lake house or a country home.
That became one of my favorite things to do — find an ideal spot with a spacious pool, a grill, a nice patio, a fire pit, a kid-friendly fun zone with food, or maybe a pool table or a spot for some karaoke, and invite everyone out for a few days and nights of ol’ fashioned relaxin’. That also meant, finding things to do during the long weekend, so even if you find a spot to book, there’s great food and drinks to be found.
Better yet, if you just don’t want to host and cook all weekend long, letting someone else do the driving for us (hello, limo!) or loading up some cars ourselves and heading to somewhere that can handle the cooking for us for the 4th, or the days to follow.
And, there’s always room for that quick trip down to Galveston, Conroe or Kemah, as well.
If, like me, you’ve got friends and/or family rolling into town expecting a great backyard bbq party, or maybe you’re the one coming in to Houston for the long weekend and trying to organize something to get everyone together, here are some celebration ideas to help you handle the heat that comes with hosting a 4th of July celebration.
Even if your 4th of July party is down to the last minute, stay cool, it’s still doable.
I have a sad fact to admit upfront. Although I grew up in Houston, I never visited NASA while I lived there.
I think that’s a common thing around the world even, that you take for granted the things in your backyard.
Did you know the NASA Johnson Space Center Houston is open all throughout the 4th of July holiday weekend?
Why not rent an awesome place to host a 4th of July Party on Thursday, then go for a out-of-this-world exploration of the Space Center on Friday? Or if you need a day to recover, head over on Saturday or even Sunday from The House at NASA Ranch that’s almost on the doorstep.
This spot fits all those needs:
Looking to really get away from the city and have every little detail taken care of for you for a bigger group outing, maybe bringing in people from around the Houston area?
This SJP Ranch spot has serenity by the bundle, with all the comforts of pure countryside bliss that can turn into an evening shindig in a moment’s notice — not to mention a swimming pool to suit, well, everyone ready to put on their swimsuit for what’s sure to be a hot weekend.
These are only a couple venues ready to help you host a July 4th spectacular, and you can explore more fantastic sites throughout the Greater Houston Area, and check out group ideas in our story about great Group Activities in Houston That Guarantee a Good Time.
Book a venue that will handle the grilling, the chilling, the cooking, the drink mixing and more for you!
Or, you can catch on somewhere that’s BYOFood and/or BYOB. Then you can cook up your favorites to bring along, or even better, order from your favorite BBQ spot and all you have to do is hand it out and watch the happy faces.
Let’s start with an obvious choice — steak.
How about a savory steakhouse to set the tone, such as the Cavu Room at Lynn’s Steakhouse? Your group can go and eat, then head out for a night of fun, go watch the fireworks, or head back to the house (either yours or one you’ve rented).
How about a sunny space with brisket, pulled pork and chicken fried chicken on the menu? And if you’re up for it, there’s plenty of walkable park space nearby to for a stroll after eating at The Sunroom at Clay’s.
Is Conroe calling you? Get some ice cold craft brews and in-house catering with tons of space and plenty to do at B-52 Brewing Co., as part of your July 4th weekend by the water.
One place, loads of options! Especially if you’ve got people coming in from out of town.
A wine room, a fireplace room, a breezy atrium space, all within the walls of somewhere to sleep if it suits your weekend at the multifaceted Hotel Sorrento.
Heading to Kemah for the weekend? This is your spot.
Th Prsrv shines both in terms of atmosphere and dining experience, not to mention the location.
There are loads of options, whether you’re in Midtown, EaDo, The Heights, or in the suburbs like Cypress or The Woodlands.
Let your imagination and unique needs guide you toward an Independence Day celebration you won’t soon forget!
You know what never goes out of style? Cruising around Htown.
For the 4th, let someone else take the wheel. You can let this go in so many different ways, too:
Get some catered food, or have your ride stop and pick something up, or have it drop y’all somewhere, and pick you back up!
What about a limo? Better yet, a spacious Hummer limo?
Is it out of style? Did cruising around with your friends ever go out of style?
One of my favorite Houston memories was seeing the city from the vantage point of a limo ride, and the feeling I got stepping out and walking in for dinner.
Unfortunately, the Astros are outta town during the 4th of July weekend. But, you can have the game on inside the party bus if you get on Thursday by noon, with first pitch for Astros at Toronto set at 12:07pm.
What type of fun doesn’t require a little driving in Houston?
I never had a pool growing up, or even as an adult, so driving to some sort of water was always at the top of our list when figuring out what to do over the long July 4th weekend.
A 4th of July outing that can go hand-in-hand with our first option — NASA, water, fireworks and fun on the outskirts of town on a Pedal Barge.
You could also do this as part of a larger party, where you hit the water, then come back to the rental house for nighttime grilling.
If you’re up for the short drive to Galveston, there are options galore there for booking a place to stay and eat. Up the ante with a boat tour and the chance to see some marine life at the same time.
