When it comes to inexpensive venue rentals in Toronto, there are several districts that are a go-to for our customers. The Distillery District offers a great selection of blank canvas venues, which are usually on the cheaper side since you only pay for space itself. Anywhere in Downtown or Midtown is also a popular option, since both of these areas are very accessible via public transport.

Yes. Many Tagvenue listings offer hourly hire, with current affordable rates starting from around C$40 per hour. Check the individual listing for its minimum booking time and whether setup and cleanup must fit within your hired hours.

Toronto offers a variety of affordable event venues that cater to different preferences and budgets. You can explore options such as community centres, local parks with rentable spaces, libraries with meeting rooms, and cultural centres. Additionally, some restaurants, cafes, and bars offer event spaces at reasonable rates, especially during off-peak hours. Another option is to consider unconventional venues like art galleries, warehouses, or even rooftop spaces, which may offer competitive pricing for events.

Among the listings checked for this guide in August 2026, the lowest verified hourly rate was C$40 at the 1st Floor Hall at Dovercourt House, which lists capacity for up to 250 guests. Prices can change by date or booking conditions, so check the current listing before comparing it with other venues.

Affordable birthday venues on Tagvenue include hourly spaces from around C$50–C$65, although the total depends on your guest count, booking time and what the venue includes. Minimum-spend and per-person options are also available, so compare the total event cost rather than the starting rate alone.

What is the cheapest way to hire an event space in Toronto?

The cheapest option depends on what is included in the price. Community halls and dry-hire studios can have very low hourly rates, while minimum-spend and per-person venues may include food, drinks or staff that you would otherwise pay for separately.

Compare these common options:

  • Community and heritage halls can offer some of the lowest hourly rates, but check what furniture, kitchen access, staffing and cleaning are included.
  • Studios and blank-canvas spaces give you more control over catering and setup, but you may need to arrange equipment or staff yourself.
  • Minimum-spend venues can work well for food- or drinks-led events because your agreed spend goes toward the venue’s food and beverages.
  • Per-person packages make the total easier to calculate and may include catering, staff, furniture or bar service.

For each option, calculate the cost for your actual guest count and booking duration, including anything you need to add separately.

Affordable Spaces by Size

Start with the capacity for your event layout, not just your total guest count. A venue’s maximum capacity may assume a standing event, while seated dining, a buffet, a stage or a dance floor can reduce the usable capacity.

Can you hire an event space in Toronto for free?

Free private event space is difficult to find, but some venues do not charge a separate room hire fee. Minimum-spend venues, for example, require you to spend an agreed amount on food or drinks rather than paying separately for the space.

For events where you already plan to buy food and drinks, this can be worth comparing with an hourly hire fee. Browse minimum spend venues in Toronto.

For low-cost hourly hire, current Tagvenue venues start from around C$40 per hour.

What extra costs should you check before booking a cheap venue?

A low hourly rate does not necessarily mean a low total cost. Before you book, ask what is included and what you will need to pay for separately.

  1. Get the total price. Ask whether HST, cleaning, security, staffing, insurance or other mandatory charges are additional.
  2. Check the minimum booking time. A low hourly rate can cost more if the venue requires several hours of hire.
  3. Include setup and pack-down. Confirm whether decorating, supplier access and cleanup must take place within your paid booking time.
  4. Check the catering rules. Ask whether you can bring your own food, use an outside caterer or must use venue-approved suppliers.
  5. Confirm the alcohol requirements. If you plan to supply alcohol, ask what permits, staffing, security or insurance the venue requires.
  6. List what is included. Check tables, chairs, linens, kitchen or fridge access, Wi-Fi, sound equipment, microphones and projectors.
  7. Check music and end times. Confirm rules for DJs, live music and amplified sound, as well as the time your event must finish.
  8. Confirm deposits and cancellation terms. Ask what is payable upfront, whether a damage deposit applies and when payments are refundable.

Can you bring your own food and alcohol to a Toronto venue?

Some Toronto event venues allow outside food or catering, which can give you more control over your event budget. Restaurants and all-inclusive venues are more likely to provide food and drinks as part of their own pricing model, so check the individual venue page before comparing costs.

Current BYO-friendly Tagvenue examples include The Kensington Room from C$150 per hour, Casa de Bamba from C$170 per hour and Freedom Venue from C$250 per hour.

Alcohol requirements need additional checking. Ask the venue whether you can supply your own alcohol and what permits, licensed service, security or insurance are required for your event.

Browse BYO venues in Toronto and self-catering venues in Toronto.

Can the date and time make a Toronto venue cheaper?

Yes, some Toronto venues use different prices for different days or time slots, so flexible dates are worth comparing. Morning, daytime, weekday and weekend rates may differ by venue. For example, York Studios Event Space & Gallery currently lists a morning hire option from C$45.

When requesting a quote, compare:

  • a weekday with your preferred weekend date;
  • daytime with evening hire;
  • alternative start and finish times; and
  • several dates if your event is flexible.

Use the price for your actual date and booking period rather than the venue’s lowest advertised starting rate.

Booked Main Room at Mezcalero

We had our baby shower at the Mezcalero and it was awesome! The restaurant is beautiful, it is so nice we did you have to decorate, just some balloons. Planning for the day of was easy, Anthony responded to our emails and was available for questions. The team working the event was great! The food was delicious, we would recommend the pizza pockets, chicken fingers, and sliders. We ordered from the catering party menu and thought portions were very good. Only thing that was under whelming was the cheeseboard, would recommend spending that food money on nachos for a big group.

10/10 would book for future events! Georgia was communicative about the venue pre-event and a lovely manager of the venue in person. The interior is gorgeous and just what I needed to host a murder mystery dinner. (Actually, it was better, thanks to Georgia finding various props for us from around the house and teaching us to use the coloured chandelier!). Love that the venue supplies dinnerware and cutlery to keep things environmentally-friendly. Guests who drove didn't have issues with parking nearby. It was also nice to not feel "confined" to the exact room and have guests freely use the building washrooms, store things in the fridge, employ the hallway in the game, etc. Overall it was really easy to host here and I hope the building continues to offer rentals well into the future as I'll definitely be recommending it to all my friends that didn't get to experience it themselves that night!

Booked Tropical Themed Space at TacoTaco

This was the perfect event space for my 30th birthday. The staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating. The food was amazing! So many of my guests said they will be coming back for more tacos specifically! They had what we needed for the DJ to set up and a tv, and a grass wall with a ring light to take pictures. Plus other cute spots for pictures. They also let us stay and play music until about 2:30am! Overall my event was a success and thanks so much to TacoTaco for hosting us. I will definitely recommend this space to others!

This venue was a dream! Not only is the location perfect, right off the subway, but upon entering, we were greeted by the warmth and kindness of Georgia! Her space is amazing, fit for weddings and celebrations, but in our case, it was perfect for an intimate table reading of a play. We spent the first half humming and hawing over the beauty of the space and couldn't get over how cool and quaint it truly was. Georgia was a superstar, giving us a tour, help with setting up and overall giving the best hospitality... not to forgot the snacks she offered. Overall, we have a wonderful time and would highly recommend it to anyone and all needs. Thank you so much!!

Hugo was an amazing Host, he went above and beyond to make my venue as perfect as possible. I was extremely pleased with the process of everything from start to finish, as it was super easy to get a hold of him, as well as super flexible with allowing me to see the venue and etc. Guests were super pleased with the spacious parking and how well laid out the venue space is. This was my first time booking and I will definitely be booking here again, the experience was above anything. Thank you Hugo.

Booked UUIN Entire Venue at UUIN

The venue was great for what I was looking for! Lots of space for a dance floor, my DJs we easily able to connect and make use of the sound system, and there was a perfect spot to set up a Photo Booth area for my guests to take fun photos. There’s a big chest freezer available for use, which was good for keeping ice frozen throughout the night. There’s a kitchen with a small fridge and toaster oven, which was useful for getting our food stuff organized to set out. I had ordered a lot of food, but there is a vending machine in the space which could come in handy for anyone seeking out a quick snack. Phillip was very easy to reach and communicate with leading up to my event, and very friendly and helpful. Him and his crew also helped us clean up and the end of the night, which was a nice bonus. Definitely a good little spot off the beaten path!

Best venue I have ever booked - Amazing communication (fast, professional, clear) - booking went great - Professional, friendly and helpful staff - very welcoming and clear - Event space was INCREDIBLE! The pictures don't do it justice - Guest reactions were off the chart. Everyone was instantly in love with the space! I even changed plans mid-event, and everyone was incredibly helpful in getting things arranged and changed up. Lightning fast, and non-stop friendly. Additional positives (many of which we didnt use much of) - great sound system - theres a stage! (used that!) - lighting was great as well - tons of both standing and sitting room - there's a bar! - event space is hidden behind the restaurant (which is really cool) but has its own door, bathroom, etc... Honestly if you are hosting an event for under 100 people, this is pretty much the best space you can get. I've rented out quite a few spaces in the past while, and this has been the best in terms of the overall space, service, communication, people, layout options, and guest-reactions

Words cannot begin to explain the gratitude I feel towards working with Jessica and her team. The gallery was absolutely amazing! Jessica was incredibly easy to work with. She was very understanding and always attended our calls even on weekends. She did everything possible to make sure our event was smooth running. Thank you Jessica for always being there for us from the start. Your venue made our wedding day an experience not only to us, but to our guests. Our guest loved the vibe of your venue and enjoyed taking pictures with your beautiful art pieces. We really appreciate all that you have done!
