Your Guide to Renting Photo Shoot Locations in Toronto, ON

In Toronto, you will be spoilt with options when it comes to picking the best spots for your photoshoot! From eclectic lofts perfect for an intimate engagement photoshoot to bright studios ideal for your corporate clients, the city has it all. If you’re looking for a stylish feel, head to Distillery District or Osgoode Hall. Those photogenic locations may attract many couples, so you may need to wait a few minutes to snap your perfect photo. But don’t let that discourage you - the photos you will shoot there will be worth the wait! To catch a captivating view of the city's skyline head to Polson Pier, but if you’re looking for more quirky and vibrant backdrops try the Graffiti Alley or Kensington Market. The urban aesthetic may not suit all tastes, but it won’t disappoint! When aiming for a warm and natural feeling try the city's many parks such as Bluffers Park (which features a sandy beach that’s perfect for a vacation shoot!) or High Park. Also check out Allan Gardens, a botanical garden where you can snap nature-filled photos all year long. It’s a perfect spot for an indoor photoshoot.

There are many places that are great for an amazing photo shoot, but what are the important things to consider when looking for the best location?

Type of photo shoot

Are you doing an engagement photo shoot, business photography, or maybe a product shoot? Each type will require a different space, lighting, and mood. The space you choose for your photoshoot may make or break the deal. Be sure to carefully choose the right location to fit the type of your photoshoot.

Equipment and props

Is there anything special you will need at your shoot? When looking for the best space make sure it meets all your needs and the technical equipment of the venue is up to your standard. If you will be bringing a lot of your own equipment, confirm the place is easily accessible and you won’t struggle with carrying your gear.

The budget

It may seem that the bigger the budget the better space you will find. But that’s not true! Intimate events may need just a small room to shoot in and the business shoot may be done outside for little to no cost. With the vast range of locations offered by Tagvenue, you will find affordable spots perfect for your needs.

Here are some other tips to keep in mind when preparing for your photo shoot:

Get to know your clients

The more you know the people you will be working with the easier and more satisfying the job will be, for both sides. Make a list of questions for your clients to answer: what do they expect from you? What kind of results do they want? Why did they decide on the photoshoot? Every little bit helps, so don’t neglect to ask  even the smallest question such as where and how they are planning to display the photos. Getting all the answers will help you with your work and make the clients come back or recommend you to others. Thoroughly understanding what your clients want will also make your search for the venue easier, as you will know exactly what to look for.

Make a plan

While this may seem like an obvious point, the truth is that you must stay in control of the situation at all times. Know the place where you’re shooting (perhaps a visit beforehand is a good idea!), try to get to know the people you will be working with, check the weather if you’re shooting outside, etc. If you are careful when planning the photo shoot, you increase the chance that it will go smoothly with no unnecessary delays, setbacks, or “I forgot!” moments.

Prepare a backup plan

If anything does go south, make sure to have a Plan B. The people you will be shooting might become stressed or panicked that something doesn’t go according to the plan. In such a situation you must remain calm and be ready with solutions.

But be flexible

Being prepared is always good, but trying to stick to the plan no matter what may work against you. Always be open to suggestions, unexpected occurrences, and surprises. Reacting to them may bring innovative ideas you would never come up with in other circumstances. Be understanding of the people around you, keep your eyes and ears open and sometimes, just maybe, understand that it’s best to just go with the flow.

Whether you’re a professional photographer who knows photography inside and out, a beginner trying to become the next big thing, or just an enthusiastic amateur, the location you choose for your shoot plays a major role in how the final photos will turn out. It’s important to carefully consider all your requirements and all the things you will and will not accept in the location. Deciding on all the points will make the search for the location easier, but don’t worry. The search engine at Tagvenue will help you find what you need even if you don’t have such a list. Hop over to our search bar and scroll through our amazing photo shoot locations. We promise that you will be booking your venue in no time!

How much does it cost to rent a location for a photo shoot in Toronto?

When hiring a photoshoot location, the costs will be affected by several factors, including fit-out, location, and size. For some spaces, expect to pay around $50 to $550 or more per hour. For other photoshoot locations that are rented by the day, particularly large buildings and spaces, expect costs around $200 to $5000 per day. (All data from Tagvenue.com)

Which Toronto districts have the best photoshoot locations?

Start your search for the perfect photoshoot location in Toronto’s downtown area. Check out the West and East End, or the Downtown Core, as they all offer many exciting spaces for hire. The areas around Chinatown and Moss Park are easily accessible choices and are deeply picturesque districts with a unique look. For a funky and special creative look, investigate the districts towards York, especially around Dupont St and Bloor St W.

Which districts in Toronto are the most photogenic?

When deciding upon your favourite photo shoot location, start at the iconic intersection of Yonge Street and Dundas East Street which offers a lively and iconic public square. Another favorite is the Toronto City Hall with its striking urban look for open-air shoots. Danforth Avenue, known locally as ‘The Danforth’ is perfect for an urban neighborhood shoot. For a great big city feel, without having to leave Toronto, check out The Distillery District. If you need to hire any local restaurants and cafes check out the stately buildings of La Belle Mansion or Casa Loma.

Do I need a permit for a photoshoot in Toronto?

Canadian law states that photographers are free to take photographs in public places. However, the City of Toronto requires permits for formal photography (of any kind, i.e. engagement, wedding, graduation, etc.) in any of the city’s parks. Booking and other restrictions regarding equipment, props, and music also apply. For more information call the city or visit its website. Keep in mind that private properties may have their own regulations.

Booked Norman Bethune Allen Lounge at Foy House

When we got there the room we originally booked was not available but that was okay as Georgia let us have the whole house as a result and it forced us to pivot which is an important skill to have. The house is absolutely beautiful with really interesting furniture and stunning wood finishes. I would definitely want to come back!

I hosted a birthday/photoshoot session. The space was bigger than I expected and the pictures don’t do it justice. The aesthetic was so nice and it’ was so clean! There is a barbershop next door, but you cant hear anything once the double privacy doors closed. Great privacy, and there are a couple washrooms in a hallway by the entrance. 10/10 space overall. Andy was super helpful and accommodating. Had the best time!

Great location and venue! Decorated beautifully! The furniture and each room were tastefully matching and ample space for a wedding party to take photos with the entire group. Great extra props - i.e. stage boxes and extra high chairs to add different levels/height/depth). Easy access with a code and bathrooms just down the hall. Had everything we needed!
