How to start your own art class in London

Are you ready to share your artistic expertise with other people? Whether you’re trying to become a full-time artist, pursue a side gig, or help out the local artist community, starting an art class is a great way to achieve these goals. Here are some of our best tips on how to start your own art class:

  • Check your current knowledge. If you plan to teach other people, you have to make sure you can explain different basic art techniques and concepts to other people, especially kids. If you attended art school yourself, this will come naturally to you, but there is nothing wrong with taking a course or buying an art book so that you can refine your skills.
  • Create your art class curriculum. A good learning plan will help you give consistent value to your clients. Make sure to move from the basics to more difficult concepts as your students get better, but also don’t overwhelm them with new knowledge. Everyone will have their own learning pace, and you will have to be able to adapt your teaching style to them.
  • Find your classroom. There are many different art studios available for hire in London. Depending on the type of art techniques you’re going to teach, you may have different needs for hiring an art studio space. For painting classes, you’ll want an open space to fit your students, their easels and art supplies. For more drawing-focused art classes, all you need is a venue with a big table or a set of smaller, personal desks.
  • Search for students. Now that you have everything ready to host your art classes, you can start to look for potential clients. Post about your art class on social media and different local advertising sites. Make sure not to mix groups of young children and adults - older people won’t attend classes full of screaming 9-year-olds. Don’t get discouraged if only a few people will come to your class at first - you’re just starting out!

Booked Entire Venue - Art Gallery at General Assembly Gallery Mayfair

Absolutely fantastic space. Truly beautiful decor with a huge wonderful window overlooking the grand church. It has a fridge and little reception area where you can pour drinks/serve canopés, and then a little corridor which opens up into a large room. I couldn’t fault it. The managers were lovely. I hired it for a wake/art show. It was truly heaven on earth.
