Your Guide to Hiring Unusual Wedding Venues in London

London is a truly amazing location for a wedding! This cosmopolitan city embodies creativity and originality. It is also home to a variety of exceptional wedding venues that can fulfil any couple's wishes. Your wedding day should be unforgettable, in all the best ways, so don’t shy away from searching for the perfect space where you can celebrate with your loved ones. Have a look at our guide to unusual event spaces for weddings in London below!

  • Get clear on your overall vision – Chances are good that you already have a pretty good idea of what you want your wedding to look like. Before you start booking tours of unusual wedding venues, make sure the ones you select match the aesthetic you have in mind.
  • Decide how many people you want to invite – Like any venue, alternative spaces will vary in the number of guests they can accommodate. It’s always best to know how many people are on your guest list before you start your search for a venue, so you can narrow down your options based on the size of the event space.
  • Decide what your budget is– Unusual venues can sometimes cost more than your local dining hall. It’s easy to go over budget when you find that perfect space that makes your imagination run wild, but keep in mind that it’s about more than just how much hiring the space will cost. Create a budget that works for you and stick to it.
  • Factor in everything that your venue provides – Some wedding venues provide their own private dining while others require you to bring your own vendors. Others may offer tables and decor, but you will never know until you ask! Find out what’s included with the venues you’re looking at and any additional costs that may come with it. You can also look for venues that offer special wedding packages.

After you've gone through the essential things to think about when selecting an unconventional venue, it's time to pick the ideal location to say "I do" in. What are the most popular areas in London for a unique wedding? Check out our guide to choose where to look for a venue:

  • East London – This area of London has really changed over the last decade, and has become one of the fastest growing districts in the city. Many consider East London to be quite artsy, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it boasts a variety of unusual wedding venues. From the eccentric Trading House to the beautiful and tropical conservatory in the Barbican Centre, there are a lot of options in this area.
  • West London – There’s no doubt that West London is aesthetically appealing. It also boasts a large number of unusual venues to choose from. Whether you’re looking for something trendy, like Lockhouse, or something more elegant, like Sunbeam Studios, there’s something for every taste. You can even get married on Tower Bridge in West London!
  • North London – North London is super rich in culture, offering a great number of music venues and the picturesque backdrops that are familiar from so many great films. Speaking of films, one unusual wedding venue in North London is the Everyman Screen on the Green, a cinema that provides a unique location for an unusual wedding. There’s also The Depot, a unique bar with a chic, industrial look.

Themed Weddings in Unusual Places

When it comes to planning a great wedding, embracing a special theme can transform an already special day into something truly unforgettable. Opting for an unusual venue in London and pairing it with a captivating theme creates a magical atmosphere that reflects the couple’s personalities and love story. Here’s a guide to orchestrating a themed wedding in some of London's most unconventional spaces.

Selecting Your Theme: The first step is to choose a theme that resonates with you both. Whether you’re inspired by a historical era, a fantasy world, or a specific movie or book, your theme should be something you are passionate about. Popular choices include vintage glamour, whimsical fairy tales, classic literature, or even themes centred around travel or specific countries.

Finding the Perfect Venue: Once you've settled on a theme, the search for the perfect venue begins. London, with its rich history, modernity, and many hidden gems, offers a plethora of excellent options:

Decorating Your Space: The key to bringing your themed wedding to life is in the details. Use décor to create immersive experiences for your guests. This can include:

  • Custom Invitations: Set the tone with invitations that match your theme, offering a sneak peek into the wedding's aesthetic.
  • Themed Decor: From table settings and floral arrangements to lighting and backdrops, every element should echo your chosen theme.
  • Dress Code: Encourage guests to dress in a way that complements the theme, whether it's period-specific attire, colours that match your palette, or accessories that nod to the theme.

Entertainment and Catering:

  • Themed Entertainment: Hire performers that align with your theme, such as jazz bands for a 1920s wedding or magicians for a fantasy-themed celebration.
  • Catering: Work with your caterers to develop a menu that reflects your theme, from historically inspired dishes to fantasy-themed cocktails.

Capturing the Moment: Hire a photographer or videographer who has experience with themed weddings. They'll know how to capture the essence of your theme and the assets of your venue, ensuring you have memories to cherish that are truly distinctive!

Embracing Your Theme Fully: Don’t shy away from fully committing to your theme; your wedding is a reflection of your personal story and passions. A themed wedding in an unusual London venue is an adventure that you and your guests will embark on together, creating stories and memories that last a lifetime.

Embracing the allure of London’s skyline for your wedding day not only sets a stunning wedding setting but also imbues your celebration with a sense of wonder and exclusivity. London’s rooftop wedding venues offer urban sophistication mixed with sky-high serenity, making them an unparalleled choice for couples seeking an extraordinary setting for their big day. Here’s how to elevate your wedding with rooftop romance in London’s best rooftop venues.

  • Selecting Your Skyline: The first step in planning a rooftop wedding is to choose a venue with a view that speaks to you. London’s diverse landscape offers vistas ranging from the historic outlines of Tower Bridge and the Shard to the verdant expanses of the city’s parks and beyond. Consider venues with an iconic view of Trafalgar Square or a panoramic experience of London’s stunning east end!
  • Timing Is Everything: The time of day can dramatically alter the mood and aesthetic of your rooftop wedding. An afternoon ceremony might bask in the golden glow of sunlight, perfect for a bright and airy theme, while an evening event can capitalise on sunset hues and the twinkling city lights for a more romantic atmosphere. Consult with your venue to understand the best timings to make the most of these natural backdrops.
  • Theme and Decor: While the view will certainly be a focal point, incorporating thematic elements and decor can transform the space into a truly magical setting. Consider a botanical theme with lush greenery and florals that contrast beautifully against the urban setting, or opt for a sleek and modern motif that complements the city’s architecture. String lights, lanterns, or candles can add a warm and inviting glow as the evening sets in.
  • Weather Contingency Plans: While the open sky and breezy heights are part of a rooftop venue's charm, it’s crucial to have a contingency plan for unpredictable weather. Many rooftop venues in London offer marquees, canopies, or indoor alternatives that maintain the view while providing shelter. Ensure you discuss these options with your venue to keep the day seamless, come rain or shine.
  • Personalising Your Space: Rooftop venues provide an opportunity for a bit of personalisation. From custom signage that welcomes guests to the heights to themed cocktails served at a bar overlooking the skyline, there are numerous ways to make the space distinctly yours.
  • Moments Amidst the Bustle: One of the most enchanting aspects of a rooftop wedding is the opportunity to create unforgettable moments amidst the bustling city below. Allocate time for you and your partner to take in the views in solitude, or plan a special reveal or toast with the skyline behind you for all your guests to share in the wonder.
  • Capturing the Height of Romance: Ensure your photographer is skilled in capturing the vastness of the skyline without losing these moments that make your wedding one-of-a-kind. From aerial shots that encapsulate the breadth of the city to close-ups framed against the urban landscape, these photos will be a testament to the extraordinary day you shared.

With careful planning and a touch of creativity, you can create a day that stands as tall and proud as the London skyline itself. If you’d like to see more interesting ways of making your wedding day unusual, see our 5 Unique Wedding Venue Ideas in London!

What are some unique things I can incorporate into my wedding?

If wedding customs are not your thing, you can always do things your own way. You can skip the typical white gown and suit, as well as the expected wedding rituals and sit-down banquets. By adding various forms of entertainment, fun foods and beverages, and by providing a casual setting for you and your guests, you can make your wedding a pleasant night for everyone. By doing so, you may be able to alleviate a lot of the stress that many couples experience when planning a wedding. What matters is that your wedding reflects your and your partner's unique love. London has it all, whether you want a traditional sit-down dinner in a unique historic building, a wild wedding extravaganza on a cruise, or a wedding getaway at a barn or a warehouse.

What is the best time of the year to book an unusual wedding venue in London?

The best time of year to book an unusual wedding venue in London depends on various factors, including your preferences, budget, and the availability of venues. Generally, the most popular wedding season in London is during the spring and summer months, from April to September. During this time, you'll find an abundance of venues showcasing lush gardens, scenic outdoor spaces, and historic landmarks. However, popularity often comes with higher prices and limited availability, especially for unique event spaces.

If you're looking for a more budget-friendly option or greater flexibility in booking, consider the off-peak seasons, such as autumn and winter. While these months may have fewer daylight hours and cooler temperatures, they offer distinct advantages. Many venues offer discounted rates during these quieter periods, making it easier to secure an unusual wedding space in London at a lower cost. Additionally, you may have more flexibility in choosing dates and customization options, as demand is typically lower.

Whether you prefer the colourful blooms of spring, the golden hues of autumn, or the festive ambiance of winter, London offers a diverse array of excellent venues year-round to make your wedding day truly memorable!

Great space for an intimate informal event with quirky decor and a great, friendly vibe. Well set up for live music. We had two bands playing and the set up and sound was excellent. All the staff were friendly, efficient and professional both in the planning stage and on the night. Pizzas were tasty. We had 60 guests and we felt that was about right in terms of having space to chat and dance. A bit more space for the food would have been good but it worked ok. Highly recommended.
