About this space

This is the local story of an engineering family that changed the world. As well as building the world’s first tunnel through soft ground under a navigable river, the Brunels hosted the first underground concert party here in 1827, and the museum celebrates both engineering and performance in its Grade II* listed Tunnel Shaft. The Brunel Museum is an educational charity.

The Brunel Museum is now offering a Covid-19 compliant hire opportunity of our tunnel shaft. This means that we can offer exclusive venue hire when we are closed to visitors.

The Brunel Museum is a much-loved museum in the London Borough of Southwark, celebrating the story of the building of the Thames Tunnel – the first tunnel under a river anywhere in the world.

The Brunel Museum is a much-loved museum in the London Borough of Southwark, celebrating the story of the building of the Thames Tunnel – the first tunnel under a river anywhere in the world.

The museum displays are housed within the Grade II listed engine house. The adjacent 15-metre deep tunnel shaft is Grade II*-listed. In 2016, it opened as a flexible space for performance, events and activities through the installation of a new staircase and entrance. These events are inspired by the historic use of the tunnel shaft (or Grand Entrance Hall as it was originally known) as an entertainment venue hosting concerts, banquets and fairs

The site of the tunnel shaft is available for venue hire for fashion shows, filming and photoshoots. The Brunel Museum is now offering a Covid-19 compliant hire opportunity of our tunnel shaft. This means that we can offer exclusive venue hire when we are closed to visitors.
