How to choose the perfect location for your photo shoot in Singapore?

Take some time to plan your photo shoot from A to Z. Taking into consideration the purpose of the shoot, try to come up with your creative vision of the project. What final result are you expecting? Here are some key things to consider when hunting for the perfect space to shoot in:

  • Mood and feel – Urban chic, sleek and polished or a laid-back and cosy feel? What mood do you want your images to evoke? If you’re shooting portraits, pick a location that corresponds to the person whom you’re pointing your lens at. In the case of product photography, focus on the story you’re trying to tell.
  • Colour scheme – Vibrant colours or neutral tones? Think about the colour palette that will work best for your project, then look for a space that offers the right scenery or background.
  • Lighting – Will you be working in natural light or do you prefer studio light? The first option requires more planning and adapting to weather conditions, while the latter gives you far more control over the final effect.
  • Timing – If you’ve decided to work with natural light, choosing the right time for your photo shoot will be crucial. The most popular time to take photographs outside is the golden hour right after sunrise or before sunset, when the sun is low and the light is soft.
  • Privacy – Depending on the type of photo shoot, you may want to ensure some level of privacy. If you choose a public space as your location, try to find a more secluded spot or pick a time during the day when it is less crowded. If you prefer full privacy to work on your photo shoot in peace, look for locations that can be booked for exclusive use.

Pro tip: Discuss potential locations with your client! Brainstorm the desired outcome of the photo shoot together and decide what kind of space will help you achieve it.

Other things to keep in mind

Once you know what you want from your photo shoot location, there are still a few more things worth considering, such as:

  • Accessibility – If you’re working with models, think about choosing a location that will be easy to get to. Consider the availability of parking spaces or the proximity of public transport hubs. Also keep in mind all the equipment you’ll need to bring with you – if you’ve got a lot of gear to carry, the location’s accessibility will be an even higher priority.
  • Facilities – Do you need any special facilities for your photo shoot to run smoothly? It could be anything, from changing rooms for your models to kitchen facilities or nearby cafes where you can take a lunch break.
  • Budget – Last but not least, you should consider your budget for the photo shoot. If you need to rent a space, be it a professional photo studio or any other type of venue, you can find affordable ones with prices starting at around $30. Tagvenue makes it easy to set your own price range and browse locations that won’t break the bank.

Lovely space for our family photoshoot, with good natural light all around. There were a 3 different spots for us to get our shots, and enough space for the little kiddos to run about. There was some refreshments that we could help ourselves to. Owner also gave us extra 20 mins time as there was another shoot that ended just before ours started. Appreciate the gesture.

The studio is pretty big & spacious. I liked that there is a manual/guide for all the equipment, making it easy to set them up & understand how to use them. The studio was neat & the placements are very straightforward & segregated so you can divide the spots you want to use for specific things. The speaker & ipad provided for songs was also a really great addition. Overall, very nice studio for the price & would definitely come back if I have a shoot in the near future :)
