How to Throw the Perfect Baby Shower in Los Angeles

The purpose of a baby shower is to have fun, share the joy and show support for the mommy-to-be (and the daddy!). Conversation and laughter can work wonders in terms of easing some of the stress and anxiety, while thoughtful gifts are a great way to help future parents prepare for the adventure ahead of them.

When to throw a baby shower: There’s no right or wrong time to host the celebrations. Our best advice is to consult with the mom-to-be. Before you start, though, make sure she’s comfortable with the idea and physically able to go enjoy it! There’s no point throwing a party when she’s nauseous all the time and won’t be able to participate! Though baby showers are typically hosted one to two months before the due date, some moms may prefer an earlier date, around second to mid-third trimester. In some cultures, having a party before the baby is born may be considered bad luck - but no one said you can’t throw a baby shower post-birth! Just keep in mind to book the venue for the baby shower as soon as possible.

Who to invite: Again, there are no hard and fast rules here. These events are typically a family affair, so it makes sense to limit your guest list to family members and close friends and rent a small baby shower venue. Some prefer to make it a women-only event, but it doesn’t have to be. Feel free to invite male relatives and friends. Kids can come too!

Where to hold the party: Depending on the number of guests and the vibe you’re going for, you can host it at home, use a public park, or rent a baby shower party venue. The last option is probably the most convenient, as it will take at least some of the organizational weight off your shoulders (e.g. cooking food, serving your guests, cleaning up after the event, etc.). Los Angeles is filled with amazing restaurants and charming cafes ready to host your baby shower, whether it’s a small and intimate gathering or a party for many guests.

What to bring to the event: Gift ideas usually include practical gifts, such as baby wipes, diapers, children’s books, etc. Some parents prepare a registry, where they ask for specific items they’re going to need in the baby’s first months. You can also go the DIY route and make a guest book with fun quotes or offer to do something for the parents once they welcome their baby into the world, e.g. babysit or cook a nice meal.

Games and Activities: When it comes to baby shower activities, involve the mommy-to-be in the planning process! Let her choose how she would like to spend this special day. Baby shower staples include having some food and drinks (consider serving mocktails) and opening gifts. There are also a number of baby shower games to play, for example baby photo guessing. You can even get crafty and have each of your guests design a onesie for the baby.

Private party in a quiet area

If you’d rather have your baby shower away from the hustle and bustle, check out Pasadena with its historic Old Town or upscale Brentwood and its rich selection of cozy cafes and elegant restaurants. Los Feliz and its neighbor Silver Lake are both close to the busy areas of Hollywood, Central LA and Downtown, yet boast a more relaxed vibe and are filled with cool and family-friendly baby shower spaces.

Some mommies-to-be prefer to use their baby shower as an excuse to have a true girls’ night out before the new baby arrives. For thrilling nightlife adventures, visit the city’s buzzing party hotspots such as Hollywood, Koreatown, or Hermosa Beach. Bars and clubs can serve as great alternative baby shower venues!

Beach party

And how about celebrating the new life on the way in one of the beach destinations, such as the popular Santa Monica, its artier neighbor Venice or the more secluded Malibu? Besides long stretches of golden sands and mesmerizing views of the Pacific, the cities that line LA’s coast offer a multitude of unique baby shower venues!
Picnic in a park

If you fancy a picnic-style celebration, Los Angeles abounds in beautiful public parks that are just perfect! The venue was the perfect size, not loud as it’s located at the back of their property against a side street, and it looked exactly like the photos showed. When you arrive you also get to walk through their entire venue to get to the patio and you can see their theater which is so cool! The staff were so friendly and so kind! The friends who were supposed to show up to help me set up were running late and their staff asked me what they could do to help and it literally almost made me cry. I was very stressed out for this baby shower and because of them we were ready much sooner than I had expected. The staff also didn’t hover or bother us at all throughout the duration of our party which I appreciated. I was throwing a Harry Potter themed baby shower for my sister in law and the back area was very whimsical and the perfect size for our party. Everyone was very comfortable and enjoyed themselves thoroughly!
