Opened in 1988, the Geary Boulevard Mels was the second of the "Next Generation" restaurants. One of the earlier Mels drive-ins operated in the same location from 1953-1974, and when the Pacific Stereo Store that occupied the space closed its doors, Steven Weiss, current co-owner and son of Mel's namesake Mel Weiss, rebuilt the Geary location. Steven was a soda jerk at the original location and was meticulous in replicating the details of its design for the present-day incarnation.
Today, our Geary Blvd. location serves the Inner Richmond area. Neighboring the best parks and recreation in the city, including Golden Gate Park, Mountain Lake Park, and The Presidio, Mels Geary is a favorite with both students at nearby UCSF and tourists alike. Close by you'll find the noted neighborhood The Haight, considered ground zero for the 1967s Summer of Love movement.
Patrons of the earlier location still frequent this next-generation location, first-time visitors often comment on the waitresses addressing everyone at the counter by their first name as if they've been friends for years. Offering nearby access to The Great Highway of San Francisco, Mels Geary Blvd is the perfect spot to grab lunch before heading to Ocean Beach or enjoying a drive down the coastline.
