Founded in 1867 by Pastor Jacob M. Buehler, Saint Paulus Lutheran Church played a pivotal role in spreading Lutheranism on the Pacific Coast. The church rapidly grew to 1,400 baptized members in 25 years, established the first-day school west of the Rockies in 1872, and initiated missionary outreach, founding multiple California congregations.
Despite challenges like the 1906 earthquake, the church persevered. In the 1970s, it left the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, contributing to the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The congregation adapted to serve the homeless, those impacted by HIV/AIDS, and the less fortunate.
In 1995, a devastating fire led to a transition to a "church without walls." After years of ministry, it returned to its original location in 2021. Saint Paulus continues its mission and looks ahead to many more years of service.
