John Bennet Lawes, the founder of Rothamsted Experimental Station, now Rothamsted Research, was born in this house on 28th December 1814. His ancestors, however, the Wittewronges, built the original Manor in the 1600s. There is actually a record of a settlement on this site dating back as far as the 13th Century.
The Manor is filled with impressive features including historic fireplaces, beautiful portraits, and lovely Spanish Leather wall coverings, many of which have remained largely untouched since the 1600s.
